Thing 17-YouTube and TeacherTube, and downloading videos to your computer.

Purpose :  To learn about the range of videos available for education and how these services can be used for teacher and student publishing.

Background

Every new organization today incorporates video into their website.  Any news item featured on the evening news is immediately posted on the news organization’s website.  In the 2008 presidential election, both presidential candidates used YouTube as a way to spread their message.  During the past several years, online video hosting sites have exploded allowing users to easily upload and share videos on the web. Among all the web 2.0 players in this area, YouTube is currently top dog serving up over 1 million video views a day and allowing users not only to upload their own video content easily, but also embed clips into their own sites easily.  Also developed was Teacher Tube in an effort to provide more educationally related content in one place.  Recently, an “edu” section of YouTube developed which are videos from colleges and universities.  Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/edu

Do some searching around YouTube yourself and see what the site has to offer.  You may find videos related to your personal hobbies, family films as well as educational related films.

You'll find everything from 1970s TV commercials and 60s music videos to library dominos and a video made by library school students for National Library Week. There's also the cult classic Conan the Librarian.

Some general videos to watch that will cause you to think about the future of education:

Blog Post: “Thing 17, Online Videos”:  Embed one of the videos in your blog and write about the video and what you have learned about online videos.

Bonus

Create your own video talking about your experiences with the 23 Things program and tag it “23Things”…and post it online.   Then, post it on your blog as well.
