Thing 15 - Online Collaboration Tools, Graphic Organizers and Library Thing.
Purpose: To learn about the various (mostly free) online collaboration tools, graphic organizers and library things that can be used for presentations and collaborating with others.
Background: Online collaboration tools allow a person to communicate with another person or group of people online. These tools include digital whiteboards, the ability to share a PowerPoint or other presentation with a large group of people all at once, the ability to record and post presentations for later viewing, and chat rooms.
Read this blog post about online collaboration tools: http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/the_online_collaboration_tools_guide.php
Additionally, there are a range of tools that allow for creating graphic organizers which can be used in connection with collaboration tools.
And, then, there is….
Are you a booklover or cataloger at heart?
Do you enjoy finding lost and forgotten gems on the shelf to read?
Then LibraryThing may be just the tool for you. Developed for booklovers, this online tool not only allows you to easily create an online catalog of your own, it also connects you to other people who have similar libraries and reading tastes. Add a book to your catalog by just entering the title or connect with other users through your similar reading tastes. There are lots of ways to use LibraryThing. You can even view your books on a virtual shelf, add a widget to display titles that are in your catalog (see sidebar for sample), or install a LT Search box on your blog.
Discovery Activity:
For this thing, you will need to find some collaborators. The collaborators can be other people involved in the 23 Things (see Clovis23Things Blog) or colleagues or anyone who lives outside your area.
1. Decide on a topic you can share with at least two other people who do not live near you. What you share could be a teaching strategy, a personal hobby or some other type of information.
2. Now, find the other people (2 or more others) who you would like to share your presentation with. Ideally, it would be great to find other people involved in the 23Things experience (clovis23things.wordpress.com) or it can be any colleague, friends or family members who live different places.
3. Now that you have a topic presentation and a group of people with which to share the presentation, identify and set up the collaboration tool you will use to complete this discovery activity (see the resource list below). You are welcome to take this opportunity to ask a company to provide you an educational demonstration account to test out for this activity. For people who live in California, consider exploring and using the K-12 High Speed Network/Internet bridge. Website: k12video.org. (Free downloads from X-Meeting (Mac) and PolyComPVX (PC) both free downloads off the website).
Blog Post: “Thing 15, Online Collaboration Tools”: Create a blog post sharing how the collaboration activity worked. What did you share with others? Did you add some books to Library Thing? How might these be utilized with a class?
